Encountering God’s Love During a Near Death Experience
"When I came back, I had this feeling of calmness...this phrase kept going through my head, ‘Love one another.’"
Below is a snippet of a conversation with Martha Motz, a 74-year-old woman of God. Martha died on the operating table at 26 years old. When she came to, she was profoundly changed. If you prefer listening, you can listen to the full conversation on Apple, Spotify, or watch on YouTube.
Martha: When I was 26, I actually died on the operating table and came back. And when I came back, it's hard to explain because I'm explaining in finite terms and what happened to me was infinite. I was in the middle of surgery and they had a bleeder and they couldn't control it and they almost lost me.
And when I woke up, I was back in my room and the doctor was there at the foot of my bed. And I had worked in the medical field as a medical terminology. And I thought, what's the doctor doing in my room after surgery? He should be out on the golf course. But he was there and he said, ‘We almost lost you. And I'm so glad that we didn't.’
And then I went home and the next few days I was talking with my Christian girlfriend and I said, do you know what happened to me? I said, all of a sudden I was going through this tunnel and there were two beings around me. And they were very lovingly and holding me. And all I could think of was they were angels and they were leading me through. We went down through hell and I could see the people on both sides in hell and they were crying out, ‘Help me.’
But as we were going through this tunnel, I felt the love around me of the angels, of the Lord. And it's like if someone would hold you and hug you tight for, just multiply that by a thousand times, the feeling of the love of someone holding you. And that's the love that I felt. And I thought in my head, ‘Can these creatures hurt me?’ I didn't say it out loud, I just thought it. And the angels answered back, ‘They can't hurt you, you're of God.’ And I kept going faster and faster, and then all of a sudden it was black. And then I came to.
So it was just a beautiful experience. And when I came back, I had this feeling of calmness. I had a feeling that…this phrase kept going through my head, ‘Love one another.’ We're here on earth to love one another, not judge or anything like that. If we could just love one another, we could get along so much better on this earth.
And then I would, all of a sudden I noticed like when I'm looking at a plant or a leaf or a flower, just how beautiful and intricate it's made, you know, all the veins on a leaf and the flowers look so beautiful. I just had a new awakening to this earth.
Katharine: Yeah, that’s amazing. I mean, what a powerful experience that is. And I remember reading a book several years ago about near death experiences, of people who have experienced sometime similar to what you did. And they all describe very similar things, that feeling of love, like where it's just more than we can even, as humans right now, explain. And then, you're mentioning, if we could just love one another, I mean, God is love, right? That’s who He is.
Martha: And He makes it so simple. Even for the simplest person. It's not hard.
Katharine: You're so right. That brings to mind this verse, I think it's in Ecclesiastes where it says, you know, God made human beings straightforward, but they have devised many schemes or something to that effect. I mean, how true, right? It's like He made things so simple. But also as humans, you know, we just make a mess of things.
Martha: Yeah, we do. It's our sin nature. We can't help it.
Katharine: So yeah, so I mean, one question that comes to mind, and when talking about this is like, how can we love others well, right? How can we go back to that foundation of loving others?
Martha: Well, again, I have a sin nature still in there, so.
Katharine: We all do!
Martha: But I try to say good morning to people or smile, you know, not always, but I really try to come across that way. If anybody's in need, try and help them. But we don't always know when people are in need.
Katharine: Right. I think we can, you know, sort of underestimate just the smallest things like smiling at someone.
Martha: Yeah, another thing is after this experience, I noticed that I had this gift where I could go into a room and see a room full of people and I wouldn't really see their faces. I would see their spirits. If they're a good spirit, semi-bad spirit or evil, and that was just kind of, just a question mark, like, okay, Lord, I have this gift…
